Australian Work Visas
Australian work visas allow skilled professionals from overseas to live and work in Australia, either temporarily or permanently, depending on the visa type.
What are Australian Work Visas?
Australian work visas are permits that allow foreign nationals to live and work in Australia legally. They are designed to fill skill shortages, support the economy, and give individuals the opportunity to contribute their expertise in Australia.
There are different types of work visas, depending on your skills, occupation, and circumstances:
- Temporary Work Visas – Let you work in Australia for a set period, often through employer sponsorship (e.g. Temporary Skill Shortage visa – subclass 482).
- Skilled Migration Visas – Points‑tested visas for qualified workers who meet Australia’s skill and occupation needs (e.g. Skilled Independent visa – subclass 189, Skilled Nominated visa – subclass 190).
- Regional Work Visas – Allow skilled workers to live and work in designated regional areas of Australia (e.g. Skilled Work Regional visa – subclass 491).
- Permanent Work Visas – Pathways that allow skilled workers to live and work in Australia permanently, often after being nominated by an employer or a state/territory (e.g. Employer Nomination Scheme – subclass 186).
Each visa type comes with its own eligibility rules, such as age limits, English language ability, skills assessments, health and character checks, and sometimes sponsorship from an employer or state.

Work Visa Requirements
While each visa subclass has its own specific rules, most Australian work visas require applicants to meet the following general criteria:
- Occupation & Skills – Your job must be on Australia’s skilled occupation list, and you may need a positive skills assessment.
- Age – For most skilled visas, you must be under 45 years old when you apply.
- English Proficiency – You’ll need to demonstrate your English language ability through an approved test (such as IELTS or PTE).
- Health Standards – Applicants must pass a medical examination to show they meet Australia’s health requirements.
- Character Requirements – Police clearances are required to prove good character.
- Sponsorship or Nomination – Some visas require an employer to sponsor you, or a state/territory government to nominate you.
- Points Test (for certain visas) – Visas like the Skilled Independent (subclass 189) and Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) require you to reach a minimum points score based on age, work experience, qualifications, and other factors.
- Financial Capacity – In some cases, you may need to show you can support yourself and any dependents upon arrival.
