The Parent Boost Visa in New Zealand is designed to help parents of New Zealand citizens or residents join their family in the country more easily. This visa provides a pathway for parents to live in New Zealand, with fewer restrictions compared to other family visas.

Applicants generally need to meet specific financial requirements and health checks to qualify. The Parent Boost Visa aims to support family reunification while managing New Zealand’s immigration priorities.

Understanding the eligibility criteria and application process is essential for parents and sponsors considering this visa option. This article breaks down key details to help clarify who can apply and how to navigate the system.

Purpose and Benefits of the Parent Boost Visa

The Parent Boost Visa is designed for parents who wish to stay in New Zealand longer than a standard visitor visa allows. It offers a longer stay, up to 10 years with a visa extension, enabling parents to spend more time with their children or grandchildren.

Key benefits include:

  • Extended stay with the ability to re-enter New Zealand multiple times.
  • No requirement for parents to hold a resident visa.
  • Provides a pathway for family members of permanent residents or citizens to maintain close family ties.

This visa helps address family reunion needs while maintaining immigration control through strict sponsorship and eligibility guidelines.

How the Parent Boost Visitor Visa Differs from Other Visa Options

Unlike the Parent Category Resident Visa, which leads to permanent residency, the Parent Boost Visitor Visa is temporary and does not grant residence rights. It permits extended visits but does not allow work or direct access to social benefits.

Compared to the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, the Boost Visitor Visa typically allows a longer stay and easier sponsor requirements. The visitor visa does not require the sponsor to demonstrate the same high income threshold as the resident visa category.

This visa fills a gap for migrants and New Zealand citizens who want their parents to stay for an extended period without the complexities of residency applications.

Eligible Sponsor Criteria

Sponsors must be New Zealand citizens or residents, including those with permanent residency or skilled migrant status. They must be living in New Zealand and able to demonstrate an income that meets the minimum threshold set by Immigration New Zealand, usually tested over the previous 12 months.

Sponsors must also:

  • Provide evidence of their residency status.
  • Show a genuine relationship with the parent or parents applying.
  • Agree to support their parents financially during the stay.

These criteria ensure that parents are genuinely supported and not a burden on New Zealand’s social system during their visit.

Financial Requirements and Criteria

The sponsor must earn at least the New Zealand median wage (or 1.5 times the median wage for joint sponsors) to sponsor one parent. For each additional parent, the required income increases by 0.5 times the median wage; OR

The parent(s) must have a personal income equal to New Zealand Superannuation—currently NZD $32,611.28 gross per year for a single parent, or NZD $49,552.88 for a couple; OR

The parent(s) must have sufficient personal funds: NZD $160,000 for a single applicant or NZD $250,000 for a couple.

Eligibility and Application Requirements

Eligibility Criteria for Parents

Parents must be the biological or adoptive parent of a New Zealand resident or citizen to qualify.

A close family relationship is essential; sponsors must provide proof through birth certificates or legal adoption records. The applicant cannot hold any other New Zealand visa that grants residence. Meeting all requirements does not guarantee visa approval, as each application is assessed on individual merit.

Health and Character Assessment

Applicants must meet an acceptable standard of health to qualify. This includes medical examinations to check for conditions that may impose significant costs on New Zealand’s health system or pose a public health risk.

Character requirements include police clearance from every country where the applicant has lived for more than 12 months in the past 10 years. Those with serious criminal convictions may be denied. Passing these assessments is mandatory before the final visa decision is made.

Comprehensive Health Insurance Requirements

Applicants for the Parent Boost Visa must have comprehensive health insurance. This insurance should cover illness, injury, and emergency medical treatment for the entire visa duration. The policy must be valid in New Zealand and cover hospital stays, surgeries, and prescription medications.

The insurance should also include public health services where applicable, although private coverage is critical due to limited public support for temporary visa holders. Proof of purchase and ongoing coverage must be provided to Immigration New Zealand, and failure to maintain this can affect visa status.

Parent Boost Visa Fees and Related Levies

Visa application fees for the Parent Boost Visa vary but generally fall into a standard range. Applicants must pay an immigration fee which covers visa processing.

As of June 2025, this fees are as follow:

The Parent Boost Visa costs NZD $3,000 for most applicants, while those eligible for the Pacific fee band pay a reduced fee of NZD $2,450. Both fees include the immigration charge and levy.

In addition, all applicants must pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy of NZD $100.

After three years, a health check is required, with a processing fee of NZD $325 for standard applicants or NZD $240 for those in the Pacific fee band.
