Work Visa Eligibility Requirements for Migrating to Australia
To immigrate to Australia from UAE, you must meet specific eligibility criteria, especially if you’re applying under the General Skilled Migration (GSM) programme. Australia gladly welcomes skilled individuals who can contribute to its growing economy and vibrant society, but you’ll need to tick the right boxes before submitting your application.
Age
Applicants usually must be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation. Typically, the ideal age range for gaining the most points is between 25 and 32.
English Language Proficiency
Having strong English skills is essential.
Skills Assessment
Your qualifications and work experience must be assessed by the relevant Australian authority for your profession—for example, Engineers Australia for engineers or ACS for IT professionals.
Points Test
Australia uses a points-based immigration system. You need a minimum of 65 points to be eligible. Points are awarded for age, English language ability, qualifications, skilled work experience, and other key factors like regional study or partner skills.
Health and Character Requirements
All applicants must undergo health examinations and submit police clearance certificates. This guarantees that migrants meet Australia’s high public health and character standards.

The Visa Application Process
Understanding how to immigrate to Australia from UAE means being prepared for a multi-step journey. Here’s a general outline of what to expect:
1. Determine Eligibility
Before anything else, assess your eligibility based on your age, English skills, qualifications, and work experience. You can use our points calculator to estimate your score.
2. Skills Assessment
You must get your skills assessed by a relevant authority based on your profession. This is a mandatory step in the GSM pathway and must be completed before lodging an Expression of Interest.
3. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)
You’ll need to submit an EOI via SkillSelect, which allows Australian employers and state governments to view your profile. A high EOI score improves your chances of receiving an invitation to apply.
4. Receive an Invitation
If you meet the points threshold and are deemed suitable, you’ll receive an invitation to apply for the visa.
5. Lodge Your Visa Application
Once invited, you must submit your visa application via ImmiAccount along with all supporting documents, including identity papers, qualifications, English test results, and police clearances.
6. Health and Character Checks
Attend a panel clinic for a health examination and provide up-to-date police clearance certificates.
7. Wait for a Decision
Processing times vary depending on the visa category:
- Skilled visas: Typically take between 6 to 12 months.
- Employer-sponsored visas: Often processed faster, usually within 3 to 8 months.
- Student visas: Generally processed in 1 to 3 months, though this can vary depending on the education provider and application volume.
- Partner visas: Onshore and offshore applications can take 12 to 24 months, depending on your relationship status and documentation provided.
- Parent visas: Can have significantly longer wait times, sometimes exceeding 5 to 10 years, especially for non-contributory visas.

Pathways to Australian Citizenship
1. Employer Sponsored Pathways
a) Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482) → Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) (Subclass 186)
- How it works: Many temporary skilled workers start on the SID 482 visa and, after a period of work (usually 2-3 years), may be sponsored by their employer for permanent residence via the ENS 186 visa (Temporary Residence Transition stream).
- Requirements: Occupation on the relevant list, employer nomination, skills and English requirements, age under 45 (some exceptions).
b) Regional Pathways
- Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 494): For workers in regional areas. After 3 years, you may transition to permanent residence via the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (Subclass 191).
2. General Skilled Migration (Points Tested) Pathways
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 491): Points tested, requires state/territory or family nomination for regional areas. Eligible for permanent residence via Subclass 191 after 3 years.
Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189): Based on points (age, English, work experience, qualifications), no sponsorship required.
Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190): Points tested, requires state or territory government nomination.
